Plastered white walls of timber framed houses line the cobblestone streets of this ancient mining town. For over 950 years, the continuous mining of non-ferrous metals such as silver, zinc, and gold has brought this town great prosperity and even garnered the attention of Emperor Henry II, who built residency at the foot of of the mines in 1009.
In the German hills just north of Rammelsberg sits the ore-rich Harz mountains. It has been said that mining has taken place as early as the 3rd century BC, however the earliest documented excision took place in the 11th century. The long history of mining has brought many innovations in mining, including one of the most important in the western world: The Upper Harz Management System. This system, developed over a period of over 800 years, consists of a series of artificial ponds, channels and streams that run from the mountain, through the town of Rammelsberg. These streams not only assist in the drainage of the mines but also generated power as the system continued to function until the late 1980’s.
