Pro Tip # 4
All trends aside, "skinny ties" aren’t made for everybody and that’s a cold fact.
When it comes down to choosing the right width necktie, it’s all about proportion and size. Tall and slender individuals look best in a slimmer cut necktie, while men with a bigger chest look better with a little more width in their ties. No matter your size, a modern look is easily achieved with the right proportion.
As a quick rule of thumb, neckties shouldn’t be any wider than the lapel on your jacket, otherwise your look can begin to look unbalanced.
The size of your tie should mirror your physique. If you’re on the shorter side and sporting a 46 inch chest, it’s generally best to stay away from ties smaller than 3.25”. Same goes for guys wearing a 36R suit jacket- unless you’re after a very specific look, you should stick to a tie size somewhere between 2” - 2.75”.
Here’s a size chart breakdown:
- 34" - 38” Chests : Wear a Necktie between 2” - 2.75”
- 40” - 42” Chests : Wear a Necktie between 2.75” - 3.25”
- 44”- 50” Chests: Wear a Necktie between 3.25” - 4” *** Consider looking into buying a longer necktie
Generally these sizes will look proportionate to your jacket lapels and the shapes of your body. If you’re on the taller side, try leaning towards a skinner tie - you’ll pull it off.
